ABOUT US
Through creativity, stories and exploring wisdom, we seek to inspire women by revealing the worth in aging and menopause.
Hi, I’m Shawnalee. One of the co-founders of Crone Culture, and yes—I’m proudly over 50.
That part matters, because I deeply understand the richness, the contradictions, and the clarity that comes with this chapter of life. It’s not just experience—it’s perspective. It's also attitude. If you know me well, it isn't any surprise that I believe in doing things that scare me. Particularly the things that society thinks 'older' women shouldn't do.😜
I’ve been a quiet kind of rebel & an artist for as long as I can remember. Some of my earliest memories are of my grandmother’s studio, surrounded by the scent of oil paint and the quiet rhythm of creation. That early exposure to art shaped me, and my path only deepened from there—through formal training at Emily Carr University in design and photography, and later, working as a self-taught character animator in California. That work gave me a deep appreciation for the body as language—and how much can be said without words.
Since 2019, I've owned my own photography studio and since 2022 I’ve been running an annual: Portraits and Story Series for Women Over Forty. Over time it has become something bigger in my heart —a celebration, a reclamation, and a quiet rebellion against invisibility. That work didn’t just inspire Crone Culture—I believe it is Crone Culture in its earliest form.
When Jennifer Randall and I crossed paths, it felt less like a meeting and more like a recognition. There was this connection —instantly and deeply— Over time it became evident that we were meant to make something together. And Crone Culture? It’s the project we didn’t even have to explain to each other. We just knew.
Hello! I’m Jennifer, and as far back as I can remember I was writing poetry, drawing, making books of stories. Countless hours of imagination in the making of things.
Of all the journeys my life has taken, I always come back to a creative life. My artistic pursuits include working with collage, textiles, language, poetry and really anything that interests me to explore at the time. I see, feel, relate to everything in my life from a perspective of ‘what ifs’, and ‘why nots’.
I am in love with the simplicity of modern design, all out maximalism and definitely the grey areas in between that are not so grey.
The desolate charm of the broken brick alley.
Gaudy ornate gold accents.
Dusty velvet jackets worn with paint covered overalls.
There is not only beauty everywhere, but curiosity.
Interest in the design, the opulence, the decay.
Just look at it! It’s all so delicious.
Love, family and social justice has led me to explore versions of myself and the feminine experience in western society. My art frequently focuses on women based topics, leading to several series: exploring themes of Motherhood and also feminine archetypes. In the feminine archetypes lies The Crone. Being in my Crone days, I developed great curiosity about this phase and the history of its negative connotations.
I am in my 60’s and exploring issues of aging and society is really fascinating. How much negativity is in this dynamic is mind boggling.
I'm here to inspire change in the narrative, to explore the possibilities that we have been fed all the wrong information about aging, info focused on decay, not wisdom and beauty.
Co Founder Shawnalee and I have worked on art projects over the years. Our friendship blossomed and so has our connection because of being in menopause and being post menopause and the whole feminine experience.
When we started talking about creating a project, a magazine, we both lit up inside and out!
Crone Culture.
What’s in a name? Especially a name like this with a mire of heavy, bitter connotations. What lies within the name Crone Culture is radiant!
